SSM St. Mary’s Health Center is a tertiary maternal-fetal care center (one that provides specialized services over a wide area) and training center for the Saint Louis School of Medicine Obstetrics program. St. Mary’s offers a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, managed collaboratively with SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and physicians from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. St. Mary’s can care for sick or premature babies or, in some cases, the sickest babies may be transferred a few miles away to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center for the special care they require. St. Mary’s also provides specialized care through the SSM Perinatal Center and a 17-bed antepartum unit for high-risk pregnancies. High-risk expectant mothers may stay on the antepartum unit for up to three months to help ensure a safe delivery and healthy outcome.
The Health Center’s physicians and nurses are experienced and equipped to handle the most complicated deliveries. This includes twins, triplets, quads and higher order multiples. St. Mary’s also operates the region’s only Maternal Transport Team that provides nurse specialists to accompany pregnant moms from outlying hospitals to St. Mary’s.
