May 18, 2010 (Richmond Heights, MO) – Annually since 2003, SSM St. Mary’s Health Center awards the Joanne Strahinic Excellence in Nursing honor to four nurses in four categories: Excellence in Patient Care; Excellence in Leadership, Mentorship; and Coaching, Excellence in Innovation and Evidence-Based Practices; and Rising Star. Nominations are made by SSM St. Mary’s staff, and winners are selected anonymously by the previous year’s winners.
On May 7, the 2010 winners were announced.

The annual SSM St. Mary’s award honors its namesake, Joanne Strahinic, who was a member of the SSM St. Mary’s nursing team from 1963 until three months before her death on Nov. 10, 2002. During her 39-year nursing career at SSM, Joanne held a variety of positions – staff nurse, head nurse, supervisor, director of nursing and vice president of patient care services. Joanne was SSM’s first lay supervisor for the surgical specialties of Orthopedics and the Emergency Department.
Joanne’s dedication to exceptional patient care was evident to all whose lives and hearts she touched. The Joanne Strahinic Nursing Excellence Award was established at SSM St. Mary’s to recognize nurses who make outstanding contributions to their chosen profession. These nurses exemplify the mission and values of SSM Health Care through demonstrated excellence in their daily practice.
