Where once nuns ran hospitals across our system – and across the country -- SSM Health Care today has fewer than a dozen sisters still employed. Yet Sister Mary Jean Ryan, who recently transitioned to Board Chair after 25 years as SSM’s CEO, told the New York Times this was no time to be “maudlin” about the transition from religious to lay leadership.
Instead, she said in an Aug. 21 New York Times article, maybe “this is a moment for people to acknowledge the contribution that has been made by women religious throughout our history in the United States.”
