SSM first in Missouri
Earlier this year, surgeons with the SSM Weight Loss Institute at DePaul completed the first single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for adjustable gastric banding ever performed in Missouri. Rather than the traditional five small incisions, Drs Stephen Scott and Roger de la Torre used a single small incision as their entry point.
“Once you get inside, the banding procedure is the same. What’s different is ‘how’ we get inside. Anytime you can make fewer or smaller incisions, it’s definitely in the patient’s best interest. So this is very exciting,” says Dr. de la Torre.
“The advantages for the patient are fewer scars, obviously, but with fewer incision sites we also reduce the risk of infection or excessive bleeding. Because you have fewer cuts, the recovery time is faster and the pain may also be less,” adds Dr. Scott.
Drs. Scott and de la Torre were part of the team that pioneered the FDA approval of Adjustable Gastric Banding System. The band is a silicone ring that is placed around the top part of the stomach, creating a small pouch. The ring may be adjusted several times to ensure proper weight-loss.
The SSM Weight Loss Institute offers a comprehensive program including surgical and non-surgical options for life changing and life saving weight loss.
