Adult Inpatient Services

We understand it's not easy coping with a mental health issue, and we are here to help with compassionate behavioral health services. We offer inpatient treatment programs for adults ages 18 to 65 designed to provide individuals a comprehensive assessment, evaluation, and treatment for individuals requiring a safe, secure environment due to suicidal or homicidal behaviors. The program offers a wide range of therapeutic activities, individual, family and group therapy as well as discharge planning. Adult Inpatient Programs

SSM Health offers an acute, inpatient psychiatric program for individuals who have a behavioral health disorder that threatens their well-being or the well-being of others. Hospitalization may be needed to allow for a period during which an individual can be monitored closely to provide an accurate diagnosis, to help adjust or determine the appropriate medications, or during an acute episode of temporarily worsening mental conditions.

Inpatient Programs for Children & Teens

Our physicians understand the uncertainty that can be associated with a mental health diagnosis. This confusion can become even scarier when it’s your child receiving the diagnosis of an acute psychological problem.

SSM Health provides a safe and comforting environment for your child’s inpatient stay. Our providers work with you and your child on identifying, evaluating and treating their mental health diagnosis.

We work with children ages 3-12 and adolescents 13-17 in an environment created specifically for their stage of life. Focusing on support, structure and comfort, our facilities and team work to help your child feel comfortable and open to the idea of sharing their feelings.

A key part of your child’s treatment plan focuses on stabilizing any crisis and reintegrating back into the family. Through our careful discharge planning, the treatment team will discuss with you and your family the best resources for follow-up care.

Senior Inpatient Programs

The aging process can be challenging at times for a variety of reasons - from significant life events such as the loss of loved ones, a result of a life-long mental illness, challenges to physical independence due to medical condition(s) and complications from numerous medications. Compassionate and loving care is provided to senior adults experiencing significant loss of functional abilities due to overwhelming stress, thought disorder, mood disorder and anxiety. At SSM Health, our senior care inpatient services are designed to provide your loved one a safe and therapeutic environment where the healing process can begin.

Senior Inpatient Services

SSM Health helps seniors live full lives with greater independence. We offer 24-hour inpatient care for a full range of mental health issues, as well as medical issues that may develop during a stay. Inpatient hospitalization programs offer comprehensive mental health diagnosis and treatment for senior adults. Using a multidisciplinary approach, symptoms of emotional, psychiatric, behavioral and stress-related concerns are treated to improve quality of life and relationships. Child & Teen Inpatient Care

We offer acute inpatient care to children, pre-adolescents, and adolescents at our Midtown Campus. Each patient is assessed, and a treatment plan is developed and implemented by a physician-directed treatment team including a psychiatrist, registered nurse, professional counselors, certified recreational therapists and mental health technicians. These programs offer a wide range of therapeutic activities including individual, group and family therapy, recreational therapy, and discharge planning. A unique program designed for youth who are facing the dual challenge of living with intellectual disabilities accompanied by mental or behavioral problems, the program evaluates and treats males and females ages 13 to 17 who are diagnosed with mental illness along with an IQ between 55 to 70. Focus is placed on self-care, management of behavior, community living skills, functional academics, leisure time enjoyment, rehabilitative learning activities and individual, group and family therapy. SSM Health provides this program that specializes in working with treatment-resistive adolescent males and females ages 12 to 17. Treatment is cognitive-behavioral in nature improving the patient’s negative self-talk, thinking errors and problematic behaviors and establishing positive alternative behaviors. This program is designed for males ages 13 to 17 with sexual offending behavior. The program safely supervises the patient while providing treatment for their dysfunctional behavior. Using treatment protocols, the goal is to help the patient internalize empathy, behavioral changes, sexual attitudes and values that will empower him to responsibly manage and control thoughts and behaviors. Inpatient Psychiatric Care

at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - Madison

The SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Madison psychiatric unit provides resources to help restore our adult patient’s emotional health. Our goal is to help our patients learn new behaviors, so they can develop more effective, healthy relationships with those in their lives.

Our voluntary, 20-bed inpatient unit offers a structured program for adults (18+) that includes:

  • Treatment planning
  • Treatment programs
    • Group therapy: to help our patients explore feelings, identify emotional problems they may have and provide insight into their behavior
    • Occupational therapy: to help our patients develop skills by exploring activities which can become part of a daily routine
    • Medication education: led by nursing staff to help patients understand general guidelines for taking medications.
      • Patients will be given specific information about their medications before discharge from the hospital.
    • Breathing and relaxation sessions: led by nursing staff to assist in developing relaxation techniques
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Spirituality Group
  • Community Group
  • Pyschotherapy Group
  • Daily Activity Reinforcement Therapy (DART)
  • Discharge planning

Throughout a patient’s time at our Madison-based facility, they will have care team, which includes daily time with a provider and nursing staff, to plan and organize all care. They will serve as a resource for the patient and their family.

Patients are allowed to have the following items with them while part of our inpatient program:

  • Wireless electronics (i.e. cell phone, laptop, tablet, handheld gaming systems)
  • Clothing without cords
  • Comfort items (i.e. books, blankets, non-perishable foods)

We encourage all of our patients to maintain contact with their family and friends. However, the decision to have visitors ultimately rests with the patient and their psychiatrist. 

Our visiting hours are:
  • Monday through Friday from 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM
  • Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM - 8:30 PM
