Catholic Health World shines a light on SSM Health’s security academies

April 24, 2024 03:45 PM - At SSM Health, safety and security are a top priority. Catholic Health World, a publication of the Catholic Health Association, is publishing an article in its May issue highlighting the advancements in SSM Health’s security measures. These include the opening of security academies and AVADE training for clinicians to help de-escalate potentially violent situations and provide a trauma-informed response in crises.

SSM Health partnered with AVADE to ensure we have a high-quality, effective de-escalation training program at SSM Health that includes trauma-informed care elements, physical skills/holds, and self-defense. All team members were required to complete a Level One program. Team members who work in high-risk areas are encouraged to participate in additional in-person classes that include self-defense.

As part of a systemwide effort to improve security and reduce workplace violence in SSM Health facilities, an SSM Health Security Academy was opened in 2022 near SSM Health DePaul Hospital -St. Louis. A second academy opened this past January in Wisconsin, and an Oklahoma City location will open later this spring.
The academy is just one tool SSM Health is using in response to workplace violence. These efforts have been effective in reducing workplace violence incidents. Over the last two years, the system has added more weapons detection units, hired about 100 more security officers for nearly 500 total, and redesigned physical spaces to make them safer.
