 Heart Valve Surgery

Innovative procedures that enhance the health and lives of our patients.

The SSM Heart Institute surgeons consistently perform highly successful valve procedures utilizing techniques that are often minimally invasive. For instance, our highly innovative minimally invasive surgical team treats mitral valve prolapse or patients in need of aortic valve repair or replacement through a small “mini-incision” to gain access to the heart. It’s further proof of our dedication to exploring and mastering innovative heart valve surgeries that enhance the health and lives of our patients.

During heart valve surgery, one or more valves are repaired or replaced. Repair means that the valve is mended to help it work better. Replacement means your diseased valve is removed and a new valve is inserted in its place. Whether a valve will be repaired or replaced can only be decided once surgery has begun. Your surgeon will talk with you about his or her plans for surgery and any other procedures you may need.

Aortic Valve Replacement

Aortic valve replacement is heart surgery performed to replace a malfunctioning aortic valve, due to narrowing (stenosis) or leakage (regurgitation). The aortic valve can malfunction because of a congenital abnormality (abnormal from birth) or an acquired disease (diseased with age).

Mitral Valve Repair

Mitral valve repair is heart surgery performed to repair a malfunctioning mitral valve, due to narrowing (stenosis) or leakage (regurgitation). The mitral valve can malfunction because of a congenital abnormality (abnormal from birth) or an acquired disease (diseased with age) or as a result of rheumatic fever. Mitral regurgitation may also occur as a result of coronary artery disease.

Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery

Minimally invasive heart valve surgery replaces or repairs heart valves using smaller incisions. This results in less pain for the patient, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery time. There is also less bleeding and potential for infection.

The SSM Heart Institute’s minimally invasive valve team is among the most active in the St. Louis area.  Our “mini-incision” technique significantly:

  • Lessens the length of time a patient needs to return to a full level of activity. Patients normally resume driving in seven to 10 days and can return to a reasonably full level of activities in three to four weeks.
  • Reduces both post-operative bleeding and post-operative blood requirements.
  • Minimizes the size of the incision (a cosmetically pleasing three-inch blemish rather than a six- to eight-inch scar).
  • Reduces pain and postoperative discomfort.
  • Lowers the need for blood transfusions.
  • Shortens recuperation and rehab time.
