Many neurological disorders are now recognized to cause disruptions in sleep. Pathological sleepiness is associated with neurological and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Restless Leg Syndrome and progressive supranuclear palsy. Pathological sleepiness is also associated with neuromuscular disorders such as myotonic dystrophy, inflammatory conditions such as encephalitis or multiple sclerosis, and with traumatic or ischemic injury to the brain. Sleep deprivation is a risk factor in epileptic seizures.
Also, the treatment for many neurological disorders can result in sleep problems - as many drugs cause excessive sleepiness or wakefulness.
The SSM Center for Sleep Disorders, working in conjunction with the SSM Neurosciences Institute, offers the necessary expertise and specialized equipment to evaluate and treat patients with neurological sleep disorders.
