SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital has been re-verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as a Level 1 Trauma Center, one of only two adult centers in the St. Louis region recognized by the ACS for providing the highest levels of care to injured patients.
The re-verification comes through the Verification Review Committee (VRC), an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). At the state level, SLU Hospital was the first designated Level 1 trauma center in both Missouri and Illinois – a distinction SLU Hospital has held for nearly 30 years. Verification from the ACS is considered the highest recognition a trauma center can obtain and was first awarded to SLU Hospital in 2008.
“Providing Level 1 trauma care is something that literally saves countless lives throughout Missouri and Illinois,” says Kate Becker, SSM Health SLU Hospital president. “This re-verification recognizes the vital role we play in in providing that care and is what we are truly known for throughout the region.”
SLU Hospital’s re-verification came after an on-site review of the program in July. The verification is for a three-year period.
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the COT's Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers like SLU Hospital provide not only the resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the prehospital phase through the rehabilitation process.
Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma in its current Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual.
