Robotics: The future of surgery
The most advanced robotic surgical technology is here. Introducing the SSM Robotic Surgery Institute at SSM DePaul Health Center
The SSM Robotic Surgery Institute offers the region’s most comprehensive robotic-assisted surgical program. A wider range of specially trained surgeons work with our Institute to perform the most innovative, minimally invasive surgical procedures to treat mitral valve heart problems, prostate cancer and various other forms of cancer, and kidney and gynecological conditions.
Precision surgery with smaller incisions, less pain and quicker healing
Advanced robotic technology now allows surgeons to perform traditionally “open” surgeries through tiny incisions. In addition, robotic-assisted surgery takes the concept of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and improves on that technique. Instead of using handheld, restrictive instruments, surgeons use robotic technology that mimics their movement, while providing more precision and greater range.
Many surgical procedures performed today using standard open or laparoscopic techniques may be performed more quickly, easily and safely through robotic-assisted surgery. Patients experience less pain, fewer infections and complications, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.
Blending surgeon skill with state-of-the-art computer accuracy
The SSM Robotic Surgery Institute at DePaul Health Center is powered by the latest da Vinci Surgical System, the state-of-the-art in robotic technology. The da Vinci System enables our surgeons to perform such conventional, but complex, surgeries as hysterectomy, prostatectomy, mitral valve repair, and kidney procedures through tiny incisions and with greater accuracy than ever before.
Performing traditional surgeries in such an unconventional, minimally invasive way benefits both the patient and surgeon. The robotic system translates the surgeon’s hand motions into precise movements of micro-instruments within the surgical site. The surgeon is naturally and comfortably seated at a console a few feet away from the patient. The system robotically replicates the surgeon’s hand movements in real-time, giving greater range of motion through advanced reticulated instrumentation.
More procedures in more disciplines
You can count on one hand the St. Louis-area medical centers where da Vinci system technology is now available. And most of these hospitals limit the technology to one or two procedures.
The SSM Robotic Surgery Institute at DePaul Health Center opens up your treatment possibilities. Our highly skilled and specially trained surgeons perform a wider variety of minimally invasive procedures than any other robotic surgery program in St. Louis. These innovative procedures include:
- Mitral valve (heart) repair surgery
- Gynecological surgery, including hysterectomy
- Gynecological cancer treatments, including cervical, endometrial (uterine) and ovarian
- Prostate surgery, including radical prostatectomy
- Kidney surgery, including nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy
- Pyeloplasty, surgical reconstruction of the renal pelvis
