Sports medicine is a division of orthopedic surgery that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries related to sports or exercise activities, particularly the rotation or deformation of joints or muscles caused by engaging in these physical activities.
Through SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital’s Orthopedic Center, we have orthopedic surgeons, neurologists and primary care physicians who specialize in sports medicine.
These specialists can treat any sports-related injury including tears, fractures, sprains and pulls, in patients of all ages.
From diagnostic and treatment services to follow-up rehabilitation, including physical and occupational therapy, our sports medicine staff works together to ensure patients make a full recovery and return to their daily activities. Many of these physicians care for Saint Louis University varsity athletes.
Athletic Training Services:
The SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital athletic training team partners with these area high schools to provide on-site medical care to high school athletes.
- St. Mary’s High School
- Rosati-Kain High School
- Cardinal Ritter High School
- Bishop DuBourg High School
Many of our athletic trainers not only treat patients in their chosen sport, but have also competed in that same sport at one time, which allows them to truly understand the stresses of that particular sport and the mechanics needed to perform at the highest level.
Providing a dedicated, on-site athletic trainer at area high schools positions ourselves to continually monitor and develop a customized exercise and therapy program for injured athletes all the while providing on-going education regarding utilizing proper body mechanics and ways to decrease potential injury or re-injury. Our compassionate and skilled athletic trainers will maximize the speed of the recovery process and prepare athletes to take their game to the next level.
