More than $8.4 million in upgrades to the Emergency Department (ED) and Trauma Center at SSM St. Joseph Health Center are now complete! These changes mean St. Charles County’s only Level II Trauma Center is the largest ED in the county, with more than 24,000 square feet.
The new ED has 24-private rooms and four trauma bays – nearly tripling its size – and is designed to enhance patient care with smaller nursing stations to care for four to six patients each.

The walk-in entrance and the ambulance entrance are separate, causing less confusion and congestion. Walk-in patients can access the emergency department in the same area as before (off of First Capitol Drive), however ambulances now bring patients to a new entrance located on Madison Street.
Upon entry to the new emergency department, patients are welcomed at the reception area by a nurse. That nurse then escorts the patient to a triage area to be prioritized for care based on the severity of their condition.
State-Designated Level II Trauma Center
Not all emergency rooms are the same. SSM St. Joseph Health Center is the only state-designated Level II Trauma Center in St. Charles County, which means we are equipped with staff 24/7 to handle severely injured and critically ill patients. Our trauma physicians and nurses are expertly trained to quickly respond when you need it most. We work closely with EMS and first-responders to evaluate and stabilize trauma patients even before they reach our door.
