Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be defined as overly active sweat glands. Individuals afflicted with hyperhidrosis typically experience severe sweating of the hands, face, and/or underarms and, in some case, other areas.
A surgical solution to hyperhidrosis is now being performed at SSM St. Joseph Health Center by Thomas Schneider, MD, vascular surgeon, and Stephen D’Orazio, MD, cardiovascular surgeon. Both are members of the American Institute for Hyperhidrosis.
The 30-minute procedure called the Endoscopic Transthoracic Sympathicotomy Clamping (ETS-C) Technique involves the placement of tiny, titanium clamps over the sympathetic nerve. This procedure can be reversed, unlike traditional ETS surgery, in which the nerves are severed.
ETS-C is performed under a mild, general anesthesia. The patient may resume work within 48 hours. For more information about ETS-C, call 800-779-4509 or visit www.handsweat.com.
