Serigo Garcia, MD, pulmonology, is performing a new invasive pulmonary procedure called tracheal stenting. The procedure is for patients with tracheal stenosis that can be caused by numerous conditions including tumors, scaring, bronchial stenosis following surgical resection and anastomosis or pulmonary transplantation.
The stent is placed in the trachea with the assistance of a rigid bronchoscope under general anesthesia and takes less than one hour. Patients typically are discharged the same day.
Other interventional bronchoscopy procedures such as endobronchial laser therapy, balloon bronchoplasty, photodynamic therapy, autofluorecence bronchoscopy and others also are now offered.
