As the senior leader for SSM Health - Integrated Health Technologies (IHT), Philip Loftus sets the course for information technology (IT) and clinical engineering services for SSM Health’s acute-care hospitals, physician practices and nursing homes. He is focused on delivering clinical and information systems that offer demonstrated value for customers across the health system’s four-state network.
Loftus joined SSM Health in January 2015 as senior vice president/chief information officer (CIO). He brings extensive knowledge and a clear passion for IT drawn from experience in both the health care and pharmaceutical industries. Prior to joining SSM Health, Loftus served as CIO for Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee, Wisc., where he led the implementation of the Epic electronic health record system. He also developed and implemented a comprehensive IT strategy to support the health system’s goal of forming a more closely integrated delivery system following rapid growth.
Prior to Aurora Health Care, Loftus served as senior vice president and co-chief information officer for Caremark Inc. through CVS Health. At Caremark, he led the design and implementation of a paperless electronic pharmacy system across four large mail order pharmacies. He also doubled the availability and performance of a retail point of-sale prescription processing system to 100 million prescriptions each year through a network of 55,000 pharmacies.
Loftus has also held various leadership roles at pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline Inc. and served as senior vice president of Global IT Strategy and Applications.
He earned his doctorate in computer-based modeling and simulation from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom and was a Fulbright Hayes Postdoctoral Fellow with the California Institute of Technology.
