After working in medical transcription for 18 years, Stacey Smothers knew she liked the medical field. She also knew she wanted to make a difference and personally care for patients in a more hands-on way.
So she became a Certified Nursing Assistant and was hired by SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Centralia in January of 2015. But that’s not where her dream of working in the medical field stopped.
Stacey decided to take advantage of SSM Health’s tuition reimbursement program to further her education.
After a minimum of 90-days of employment, full-time and part-time SSM Health employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement on an annual basis. Employees can use this benefit to offset the tuition costs associated with an applicable degree program at an accredited college or university. Flexible work schedules allow employees to attend classes while continuing their career.
“My director was very flexible and willing to work around my school schedule which allowed me to continue to work while finishing my degree,” Stacey said.
Stacey completed an associate degree in nursing and was able to stay in her unit and move into an RN position. But she’s not done yet. She’s continuing her education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
“I wanted my bachelor’s degree and continue to learn and grow in the field of nursing,” Stacey said.
Stacey is finishing up her bachelor’s degree, then plans to get a master’s degree to fulfill a dream of teaching.
“SSM Health’s tuition reimbursement is helping me take the steps to further my dream,” Stacey said. “Each day I’m learning more and more, especially about treating the patient as a person first so that you can provide more personal care. You don’t see the patient as a diagnosis, you see them as a whole person.”
