When to See Your Primary Care Physician

Where Should I Go When I Can’t See My Doctor?

If you or your loves ones are experiencing a health concern after hours and on weekends SSM Health has got you covered. For most non-life-threatening conditions and injuries, our Urgent Care and Express Clinic locations can meet your urgent medical needs. First, assess the level of care you require: minor, moderate or major. Then decide which SSM Health service best meets your needs:

1 - Minor Health Concerns

SSM Health Express Clinic at Walgreens* is a service for:

  • Minor illnesses and injuries
  • Skin conditions
  • Vaccinations
  • Sports physicals
  • Health screenings and testing

*This service is only available in our St. Louis region.

2 - Moderate Health Concerns

Urgent Care and Express Clinic locations are convenient, after hours options for:

  • Allergies
  • Aches and pains
  • Cuts and stitches
  • Fever or flu
  • Illness and minor injuries
  • Infections
  • Severe sore throat or cough
  • Skin rashes and conditions
  • Splinting for bone injuries
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vomiting, diarrhea or dehydration

3 - Major Health Concerns

SSM Health Emergency Department’s should be used for:

  • Severe injuries
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Chest pain
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Stroke
  • Severe pain
  • Major illnesses
  • Poisoning

For a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Please Note: Online scheduling serviced are for non-life and non-limb threatening conditions only. You should NOT use this service if you have a condition and/or illness that includes symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Dizziness, weakness, neck stiffness, vision disturbance or severe headaches
  • Seizures
  • Fever lasting more than four days

Or, if the patient is:

  • Under age 1
  • Pregnant
  • In need of psychiatric care

Anyone experiencing the above symptoms should call 911 or immediately go to the nearest emergency room.

Online Scheduling

Patients using the emergency room (does not apply for urgent cares or SSM Health Saint Louis University) and who make an appointment online will receive a phone call from a nurse acknowledging that we received the request. At this time we will also verify that the illness is appropriate for this service. Anyone who has symptoms suggesting an illness or condition that may be life and/or limb threatening will be directed to call 911 or to go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
