Intragastric Balloon

An intragastric balloon is the latest, minimally invasive procedure in weight management. During this procedure, a balloon is inserted and inflated into your stomach, which helps you feel full faster and limits how much you can eat. This procedure may be an option for you if diet and exercise haven’t helped you lose weight.

About Intragastric Balloons

Intragastric balloons are ideal for patients who are ineligible or simply uncomfortable with weight-loss surgery. During this procedure, a balloon inserted and inflated in your stomach to make you feel full. The balloon is removed after six months, during which time most patients experience the greatest weight loss. Our surgeons perform these procedures in an outpatient setting under light anesthesia. After the procedure, our team of board-certified obesity medical specialists will work with you to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

SSM Health offers one option for intragastric balloons: the Orbera™ Procedure.

The Orbera™ Procedure

The Orbera™ is a single silicone balloon temporarily placed without surgery into the stomach—intragastrically. The deflated silicone balloon is inserted through the throat and into the stomach. Once in place, the balloon is inflated with sterilized salt water and floats freely in the stomach, helping you feel full quicker and longer. The balloon is removed six months later.

With this procedure, our team of board-certified obesity medical specialists will help you make the changes that will encourage a lifetime of healthy living.
