The SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis Maternal Transport Team is the most experienced in the region, serving the metro St. Louis and East St. Louis areas and their surrounding communities since 2007. Our team has a combined experience of more than 35 years in maternal transport and more than 90 years in obstetrical nursing. Every mother transported is accompanied by a perinatal nurse and paramedic. For transports that require a neonatal team, the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital Neonatal Transport Team is also dispatched.


With Experience Comes Expertise

Our highly trained nurses are experts in taking care of pregnant moms before, during and after transport. Each nurse completes advanced training beyond obstetrical nursing care, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Intermediate and Advanced Fetal Monitoring, Neonatal Resuscitation and more. In addition to managing common indications for maternal transport, our team is experienced in transports involving acute medical complications, such as infection, diabetes and respiratory issues.

Communication is Key

For a smooth transition from the referring hospital to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis, our nurse experts work closely with our Saint Louis University School of Medicine maternal-fetal medicine specialists to keep the referring hospital, referring physician and family updated on the mother and her baby’s health.

Saint Louis University School of Medicine Partnership

The Maternal & Fetal Care Center at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis partners with Saint Louis University School of Medicine to provide expert care and research, as well as education for future caregivers. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists hold faculty teaching positions in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and provide medical resident education at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis.

The Family Birthplace

In some cases after transport to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St Louis, nationally-recognized as a 2020 Best Maternity Hospital by Newsweek, the mother’s condition is stabilized and she is able to return home to deliver at her community hospital with her OB/GYN. In more high-risk cases, the mother will remain at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis to deliver. The Family Birthplace units at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis are specialized by level of care to deliver the best possible care at all stages of pregnancy.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Babies who require specialized care may go to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Level III NICU at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis is staffed with SLUCare neonatologists for around-the-clock care. If the baby should require care from additional pediatric subspecialists, he or she will be transferred to the state-of-the-art Dana Brown NICU at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital nearby.
