Residency Research

Throughout residency training, residents are expected to complete monthly topics of interest. They also have specific research responsibilities as indicated below:

First Year Resident

First year residents must complete a comprehensive lecture on any approved topic. This will be submitted for approval no later than Sept 1.

Senior research topics should be submitted no later Nov. 1. This paper should include:

  1. A topic for study, review of the pertinent literature
  2. Development of research questions
  3. Generation of hypotheses
  4. Selection of an appropriate research methodology
  5. Development of a proposal for data analysis

Second Rear Resident

Second year residents are required to complete a case review suitable for publication. This must be submitted, or the resident will not be allowed to proceed to the next academic year.

Third Rear Resident

Third year residents will prepare a written scientific research paper suitable for publication. Residency certificate will not be granted if this paper is not submitted.

Didactic Learning

The residency director and residents maintain a collaborative, bi-weekly learning environment using podiatric cases and journal discussion. Our residents will also receive yearly stipends to attend academic conferences.

Residency Lounge

The residents have a large suite located in the medical office building connected to the hospital. This lounge has an:

  • Overnight call room
  • Office with individual cubicles that include networked computers
  • Conference room with a mounted ceiling projector, view boxes and a dry board.

Residents also have access to the intranet and internet from all of the provided computers. The lounge also has a large collection of journals, texts and DVDs for professional reference.

Electronic Literature

The physician portal is a customized application that includes access to MD Consult, Zynx, PubMed, Micromedex, New England Journal of Medicine, MEDLINE Plus and medical dictionaries.

Electronic Technology

SSM Health DePaul Hospital - St. Louis has a fully-implemented electronic health record system. Currently, the residents use the physician portal to access electronic reports and labs. Residents also have the ability to view all radiology exams using the PACS system.

Library Services

Residents have access to a full-service library located at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis.
