Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure that combines upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and X-rays to treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts.

At SSM Health, our digestive health specialists provide a full range of outpatient gastrointestinal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ERCP. Schedule an appointment today if you have questions or concerns about your digestive health.

About the Procedure

Your SSM Health physician may perform ERCP when your bile or pancreatic ducts have become narrowed or blocked, which can be caused by:

  • Gallstones
  • Infection
  • Chronic or acute pancreatitis
  • Trauma or surgical complications
  • Pancreatic pseudocysts
  • Tumors or cancers of the bile ducts
  • Tumors or cancers of the pancreas

An ERCP can also be used to detect gastrointestinal diseases and perform interventional procedures, including:

  • Repairing narrow ducts
  • Obtaining tissue biopsies
  • Placing a stent to open a blockage
  • Determining whether surgery is needed

What to Expect

Your SSM health physician will give you a sedative to help your relax and be comfortable before the procedure. During the procedure, your doctor will insert an endoscope into your mouth and advance it to the beginning of your small intestine. The exam usually takes about an hour and a half.

Make sure to tell your doctor about any allergies and medical conditions you have and all prescribed and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements you take.

Some results from ERCP are available right away after the procedure. After the sedative has worn off, your physician will share results with you and give you further instructions. If your doctor performed a biopsy, a pathologist will examine the tissue. Biopsy results may take a few days to come back.
