Disease Prevention Tips

Men often overlook the importance of preventative care - which includes maintaining a healthy lifestyle to help minimize the risk of disease. According to The National Center for Health Statistics, the average life expectancy for men is 76, compared to almost 81 for women. At SSM Health, we provide comprehensive care for men’s health and wellness issues.

Reduce Your Chances of Disease

Watch Your Weight

Obesity is associated with many health issues. It has been seen to increase the risk of:

  • Diabetes
  • Liver disease
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Colon cancer

For men, obesity can also mean lower sperm counts, testosterone and worsening erectile function.

Get Plenty of Rest

If you’re not receiving enough sleep, it can increase your risk of developing diabetes. Less than six hours of sleep per night also raises the chance of colon cancer by 50%. You should aim to get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night.

Reduce Alcohol Consumption

If you do drink, try to limit your alcohol consumption to less than two drinks per day. Any more than that can increase your risk of liver disease. Men who drank roughly four beers per day were also found to have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.

Reduce the Amount of “Simple Carbs” in Your Diet

Simple carbs include starches in bread, pasta, rice and potatoes or high-fructose corn syrup, as well as other caloric sweeteners in processed foods. You’re more likely to have lower levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and higher levels of triglycerides (bad fats) if your diet contains too many simple carbs.

Drink plenty of water

You should aim to drink eight to nine cups of water each day. On average, your body expels on average over 10 cups of fluids throughout the day. Staying hydrated also aids in weight loss and control.
