Growing minds and building confidence

by SSM Health Treffert Center

New seasons bring fresh opportunities to educate and empower neurodiverse students. This summer was no exception at the SSM Health Treffert Studios.

One of the most exciting additions was the installation of six raised garden beds, a concept developed by Dave Grulich, a semi-retired businessman and SSM Health Treffert Center van driver.

Dave brought his program design, business development, and partnership-building skills to the project. With careful planning and attention to detail, he designed the gardens and their educational purpose back in March. By May, the beds were delivered, filled, and planted – thanks to the help of a local carpenter friend and our enthusiastic participants.

In the following weeks, the gardens flourished with carrots, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, tomatoes, basil, dill, and more. These fresh ingredients became the foundation for our Cooking with Confidence class. In this program, Dave taught participants of varied ages and abilities how to grow, care for, and harvest produce. They also learned to use kitchen tools safely and manage leftovers – among many other vital life skills.

“The raised gardens provided a vibrant, hands-on experience that fostered a sense of accomplishment and connection to nature,” said Sara Kaiser,  SSM Health Treffert Studios Supervisor. “From planting and harvesting to preparing meals with fresh produce, participants engaged in activities that support sensory development, teamwork, and personal growth.”

Looking ahead, we’re excited to build on Dave’s foundation. Next season, we plan to apply what we’ve learned — and of course, plant even more. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dave and everyone who helped make this first year of gardening such a success.
