The SSM Health Treffert Center, renowned for its strength-based Treffert Approach, recently wrapped up a pilot summer art program. Let’s Get Creative! Summer Art for Kids consisted of a series of three Saturday sessions for young people ages 3-26 at Treffert West, located in Fond du Lac, Wis.
The Treffert Center explores the potential of the human mind, focusing on strengths rather than limitations. It offers state-of-the-art comprehensive, multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of autism, behavior, and communication disorders in children and adults.
This innovative series of classes, led by Treffert Center staff and made possible through a donation by the Libra Group Social Responsibility, offered participants the opportunity to be introduced to famous artists through media and music. Additionally, they were taught basic art techniques and encouraged to create their own unique art projects. They were exposed to a variety of art materials such as pencils, paint, clay and pastels.
Understanding that all students learn at different speeds, staff offered the necessary guidance and attention during each session. The unique learning experiences placed an emphasis on having fun, exploring creativity, and encouraging self-expression.
During these innovative gatherings, participants made new friends, began to develop their own unique styles, and enjoyed sharing the finished products with peers. Similarly, parents met other parents and later noted how much they learned from one another.
As one parent shared at the conclusion of the series: “Thank you for your generosity to support a future generation of great minds! As a parent it was wonderful to watch our child’s curiosity and creativity grow over the course of this series. We hope to instill in her a lifelong passion for learning. We are grateful to have had this opportunity.”
