Neonatal Cardiac Intensive Care (CICU)

Within the Level IV NICU at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon we have a dedicated 8-bed unit for babies needing intensive care before and/or after heart surgery.

The unit is a collaborative program between the Division of Neonatology and the Division of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery and includes pediatric heart specialists and neonatologists along with designated critical care nursing teams experienced with caring for babies with heart conditions.

Our specialists in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) can provide prenatal consultations to determine if your unborn baby has a heart condition and will work with you to develop an individualized care plan for both mother and baby.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

For babies needing advanced cardiac support, we have a nationally recognized program for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The technology enables doctors to temporarily circulate a baby’s blood through a device that removes carbon dioxide and replenishes oxygen and returns it to the baby. It is used for babies who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening injury or infection in the heart or lungs.

Our team has been designated a Gold Level Center of Excellence in Life Support by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) for exceptional patient care and quality.

Pediatric Heart Transplant

For children needing a heart transplant, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital has one of the nation’s leading heart transplantation programs.
