Telehealth for High-Risk Pregnancy

Your pregnancy is an exciting time in your life, but sometimes a pregnancy requires a little extra care. In fact, 10% to 20% of pregnancies in the United States are high-risk and require extra treatment. You may find yourself in the high-risk category if one or more complications during your pregnancy put you, your baby or both of you at risk for an illness, a birth defect or another medical condition.

SSM Health in Illinois uses state-of-the art telehealth technology to connect you with maternal-fetal medicine specialists at our sister hospital, SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - St. Louis. Instead of waiting for an appointment and traveling to a large city, women can be given Level II sonogram interpretations and consultations from maternal-fetal medicine specialists using telemedicine.

The experience is very similar to a face-to-face appointment. When a woman is having an ultrasound, for example, both the woman and the specialist in St. Louis watch the image at the same time.

St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis has 10 maternal-fetal specialists who routinely provide consultations to women in Southern Illinois. Doctors who specialize in maternal-fetal medicine often work with regular obstetricians, perform procedures and tests on the baby during pregnancy, and provide care for women with high-risk pregnancies.
