Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding is a great way to nurture you and your baby’s health. While it takes practice, breastfeeding has huge benefits. From lower rates of obesity, osteoporosis and ovarian cancers for moms, and a stronger immune system for babies, breastfeeding is an all-around win-win.

At SSM Health, we encourage mothers to breastfeed whenever possible, and provide the support you need during your pregnancy, and after delivery. We have lactation consultants available to guide you, answering all of your questions and helping your baby latch for the first time. You may also schedule a follow-up appointment to receive ongoing breastfeeding support.

Benefits of Breastfeeding

No formula can replicate the nutrients provided by your breast milk. Breast milk contains important antibodies and enzymes that protect your baby from infections. As a result, breastfed babies are at less risk for ear infections, allergies and asthma, diabetes and cancer, obesity and Celiac and Crohn’s disease.

The longer you breastfeed your baby, the greater the benefits. As you provide nourishment, breastfeeding enhances your bond with your child, while significantly reducing crying and irregular heart rhythms.

Breastfeeding is also great for you. Mothers secrete prolactin while breastfeeding. Studies show that this hormone reduces anxiety. Breastfeeding moms also have:

  • Less bleeding after childbirth
  • More success in losing extra pregnancy weight
  • Less risk of anemia
  • Lower incidence of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer
  • Stronger bones

Contact your health care provider to learn more about your breastfeeding options. Your doctor will connect you with one of our lactation consultants and provide any other resources you need.
