Cervical cancer starts in the lower part of the uterus in the cells lining the cervix. The three types of cervical cancer we treat are:
- Squamous cell carcinoma: most common form; develops in the cervical cells closes to the vagina
- Adenocarcinoma: starts in the glandular cells
- Mixed carcinoma: less common; cancer is found in both types of cells
Signs & Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Symptoms of cervical cancer don’t traditionally present themselves until the cancer has grown and moved to surrounding tissues. Preventative pap tests are used to find precancerous cells that may be a sign of early stage cervical cancer. If the cancer has progressed you may notice these signs and symptoms:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Bleeding after menopause
- Pain during intercourse
- Pelvic pain
