A family’s journey with the Cardinal Glennon St. Louis Fetal Care Institute starts with a call. At the Cardinal Glennon St. Louis Fetal Care Institute, you can refer yourself or your physician can do so.
Preparing For Your First Visit
After that first call, the Cardinal Glennon St. Louis Fetal Care Institute team will review your case and one of our care coordinators will contact you to welcome you to the program. At this time, they will arrange your initial visit.
Your care coordinator will plan your initial visit. They will contact your OB/GYN to obtain your current medical records, arrange appointments with pediatric specialists who will be involved in the care of your baby, as well as maternal fetal medicine specialists who will be responsible for your care. They will also schedule any additional testing that will need to be done at this initial appointment.
Your First Visit to the Cardinal Glennon St. Louis Fetal Care Institute
Your first visit at the Cardinal Glennon St. Louis Fetal Care Institute will likely last a full day. This visit will consist of meeting with specialists, and additional testing, such as detailed ultrasounds and possibly a fetal MRI and fetal ECHO (echocardiogram). Throughout the day, we will collect all of the diagnostic information gathered from these tests, speak to you about your family history and discuss your unique family needs.
You will also meet with a wide variety of caregivers and medical specialists who will work with you throughout the entirety of your pregnancy. These individuals include a genetic counselor, social worker, sonographer, Footprints coordinator and financial counselor.
You will also speak with pediatric and maternal fetal medicine physicians, specialized in the care of certain conditions, depending on the needs of you and your baby.
After all of your consultations, our team will meet as a group to discuss your case: the prognosis, any uncertainties, and recommendations for the pregnancy and delivery.
We will then meet with you and your family to discuss your unique situation, present available options and answer any questions you may have. We may also provide guidance regarding:
- The monitoring of your pregnancy
- Follow-up testing
- Therapy during pregnancy and after delivery
- Delivery time and location
- Mode of delivery
- Follow-up after birth
Every pregnancy is different. Some situations require more frequent follow-up visits with our team and the team of pediatric specialists involved in your care, to better plan for delivery. Others may simply require general monitoring throughout the pregnancy.
Throughout your time with us we will work with you to create a birth plan that’s right for you. Our goal is to develop a plan of care that can be shared with everyone involved in the care of you and your baby during pregnancy, at delivery and into the future.
Communication is the cornerstone of our program and we are here for you every step of the way. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call, we’re available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Simply call 314-268-4037 and we’ll be there to listen.
