Centralia, IL - SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Centralia Administrative Supervisors, Nathan Hebenstreit, BSN, RN, and Beth Runge, BSN, RN, were recognized for their extraordinary efforts in providing exceptional care for a patient who had difficulty finding placement in a long-term care facility. During the patient’s stay, Nathan and Beth went out of their way even on days off to ensure the patient had the supplies needed, daily activities, and healthy snacks. Under Nathan and Beth’s care and compassion, a patient and caretaker bond was formed.

“One must pause and think that Nathan and Beth’s compassion and care for this patient impacted the patient’s life in ways we may never know. Nathan and Beth truly exhibited the Mission of SSM Health and made a difference by going above and beyond in the exceptional care and compassion they provided,” said Damon Harbison, President of St. Mary’s Hospital - Centralia. “We are very fortunate to have such leaders in our ministry and are very proud of how they handled this extremely complicated and difficult situation.”

The Presidential Coins are given by SSM Health President & CEO Laura S. Kaiser, FACHE, to recognize extraordinary individual efforts, by team members at all levels of our health ministry, that further our Mission: Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God. The basket embossed on the coin is a symbol of caring, compassion, sensitivity, and enabling that harkens back to one of SSM Health’s founding sisters, Mother Mary Odilia, FSM. Arriving in St. Louis 150 years ago, she took to the streets with a basket and begged for food and money to help the sick and maintain the sisters – and used that same basket to carry medication, supplies, and food to homes where the sisters were providing care. People gave to the basket what they could and took from it what they needed. Likewise, today’s SSM Health team members are recognized for giving their all-in service to our patients and communities – while providing inspiring stories that fill the hearts of all who work here.
