March is Colorectal Awareness Month. Here is what you should know

by SSM Health in Southern Illinois makes colon health more accessible by offering phone screenings and direct scheduling for colonoscopies

Colorectal cancer is the third most common leading cause of cancer related deaths for men and the fourth leading cause for women in the United States. In fact, it is estimated that 106,590 new cases of colon cancer will be detected in 2024 per the American Cancer Society. Colorectal cancer affects people in all racial and ethnic groups and is increasing among people younger than 50.

Dr. Jose Albisu

Regular preventive screenings are one of the most powerful tools available to you. When diagnosed in early stages, depending on the location of the cancer, patients who receive treatment for colon cancer have a survival rate up to 91%.

It’s important to be screened because for most cancers, especially colorectal cancer, it is crucial to make the diagnosis early. The early diagnosis increases the survival rate significantly. Preparations are much easier than they used to be, and we try to make the process as simple and seamless as possible,” says Dr. Jose Albisu, SSM Health Gastroenterologist.

SSM Health in Southern Illinois offers direct access to colonoscopies for patients who do not have major medical problems or current gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. This means patients can get a quick phone screening instead of a pre-procedure in office visit. You can schedule a direct colonoscopy by calling 618-899-4000, option 1, then option 2.

Signs and symptoms of colorectal cancers may present like other conditions, such as hemorrhoids and inflammatory bowel disease. Symptoms vary between individuals, but if you are experiencing any of the following, it is important to consult with your physician:

  • Blood in stool (typically bright red or very dark)
  • Change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation
  • Stools that are more narrow than usual (sometimes pencil-like)
  • Unexplained stomach discomfort
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Iron deficiency anemia (low number of red blood cells)

The SSM Health gastroenterology team provides you with the latest advances in gastrointestinal treatment and offers a full range of diagnostic procedures and treatments. With our state-of-the-art GI motility lab and modern endoscopy equipment, our specialists are prepared to diagnose your condition and help you throughout your medical journey.
