Baraboo, WI (May 10, 2024) – SSM Health St. Clare Hospital - Baraboo team members, Bri Schroeder, ICU RN and Mike Thoreson, Physical Therapist are the newest recipients of the DAISY and BEE Awards given out during National Nurses Week, May 6- 12, 2024.
Bri Schroeder, RN received a DAISY Award
The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care delivered by nurses every day. Bri’s nomination came from the family of a patient she was caring for in the Intensive Care Unit and recognized her for the compassionate way in which she cared for both the patient and their family. Here is an excerpt from her winning nomination.
“Bri is GREAT! She is very thorough with her work. But, she is also very thoughtful! I have been so impressed with the thoughtfulness!
My dad been at the hospital with me and my grandma and had only eaten once today. Bri happened to be in the room when my dad said he was hungry & going to eat his leftovers when he got back, but didn’t want to leave us just yet. Bri overheard & literally gave my dad a little lunch box with a sandwich, chips & applesauce in it. It was SO, SO, SO, SO kind & honestly, just made my heart burst. She also made it out to be no big deal, but I know the cafeteria is closed at this time, so I really feel like Bri went well above & beyond with that gesture.
I was planning on staying the night here again – but am not feeling the best. I was also worried about something happening & not knowing if I did leave. Bri let me give her my number so she could call if anything happens while I’m gone, which is honestly such a huge relief. I feel like I can actually get some rest now as I stayed here last night & didn’t get much.
Bri was very polite & kind to my grandma & once again, I really am just shocked with the kindness I have seen from Bri toward myself & my family as well. I feel very lucky that I’ve had the pleasure of being around caregivers who actually care."
Mike Thoreson, Physical Therapist received a BEE Award
Just as the daisy cannot survive without the bee, nurses cannot survive without the outstanding teamwork provided by other health care professionals. The BEE Award is a special recognition for staff members who demonstrate great teamwork and communication skills, compassion, collaboration, professionalism, exemplary service, and a commitment to excellence. In his role as a Physical Therapist at SSM Health St. Clare Hospital – Baraboo Mike Thoreson has the opportunity to watch patients heal through proper exercises and provides more than just physical support to patients while on their healing journey. His nomination excerpt exemplifies his commitment to provide exceptional care.
"I had a knee replacement surgery at St. Clare. Mike saw me prior to surgery and provided me with exercises to strengthen my muscles prior to surgery. I have continued to work with him for almost 4 months post operatively. This has been a long, and at times, very painful recovery.
Mike has been extremely supportive throughout. He always listens to me and also gives me the courage to push through the pain the pain and make continued progress. He has provided empathy through my tears and is as excited as I am when we make each step forward.
Mike assists me in having the courage to push myself further to assure progress and optimum outcome. He is always researching and discussing with colleagues on ways to enhance and improve my range of motion and accomplish pain reduction."
Congratulations, Bri and Mike, on these well-deserved honors!
