Mt. Vernon, IL – SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital - Mt. Vernon announces construction has started to one of its cardiac catheterization laboratories (cath lab), marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s commitment to delivering the most advanced cardiovascular care.

The upgraded cath lab will feature next-generation imaging systems that provide high-resolution, real-time visuals of the heart and blood vessels, allowing physicians to perform complex procedures with greater accuracy and reduced radiation exposure. These enhancements not only improve patient outcomes but also streamline workflows for clinical teams, reducing procedure times and enhancing overall efficiency.

“The investment in our cath lab is an investment in our community’s health,” said Damon Harbison, President of SSM Health Good Samaritan and St. Mary’s Hospitals. “With cardiovascular disease remaining the leading cause of death in the U.S., having access to the most advanced diagnostic and interventional tools is critical. Our region deserves the best, and this upgrade will ensure they receive just that.”

Cath labs play a vital role in diagnosing and treating a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorders, and peripheral vascular disease. Procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, and electrophysiology studies will be performed with greater precision and safety, thanks to the lab’s enhanced capabilities.

“We are excited about this investment and eager to start expanding our cases with a more streamlined workflow,” said Barak Wangler, RN, Cardiac Cath Lab Charge Nurse at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital. “The upgrade will allow our team to work more efficiently and collaboratively to handle complex cases and respond faster in emergencies.”

The upgrade underscores SSM Health’s ongoing mission to lead in innovation, improve health outcomes, and serve as a trusted healthcare partner for the community. Construction is scheduled to be completed in mid September.
