Centralia, IL – In a heartfelt collaboration between SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital and the Centralia Chamber of Commerce, a simple yet powerful initiative has taken root with thoughtfully handwritten notes known as "Notes of Hope.” This compassionate project stems from SSM Health’s “A Year of Hope.” This year-long initiative inspires team members, providers, and our community to spread good news and face challenges with faith and optimism.
During a Centralia Chamber of Commerce luncheon hosted at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital—local business leaders, community members, and SSM Health staff—came together to write dozens of handwritten notes filled with kind words, inspiring messages, and heartfelt wishes. These Notes of Hope are now being distributed to patients throughout the hospital.
“This initiative is more than just paper and ink—it’s a reminder that healing is not only physical, but emotional and spiritual as well. It’s a testament to the power of community, kindness, and human connection,” said Tori Shoemaker, RN Telemetry Charge Nurse at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital Nurses and care teams have shared how patients light up when they receive a note, often reading them aloud or keeping them near their bedside.
For many patients, these small gestures have made a big impact. These few words of encouragement from community members have brought comfort, sparked smiles, and helped renew a sense of hope during a difficult time for many of the hospital’s patients.
“As we continue to deliver these notes, we’re reminded that even the smallest acts of compassion can leave a lasting impression. Together, we are creating a culture of care that extends beyond hospital walls—one Note of Hope at a time,” said Hollie Colle, Regional Vice President of Operations at SSM Health in Southern Illinois.
