Mt. Vernon, IL – SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital - Mt. Vernon is proud to announce the completion and opening of its newly upgraded cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab), marking a major advancement in cardiovascular care for the region. As the only cath lab serving nine counties, this investment brings life-saving technology closer to home for thousands of residents.

The upgraded cath lab features cutting-edge imaging and interventional equipment, allowing for faster diagnosis, more precise treatment, and improved outcomes for patients experiencing heart attacks and other cardiovascular emergencies.

“This isn’t just an investment in technology — it’s an investment in lives,” said Damon Harbison, President of SSM Health Good Samaritan and St. Mary’s Hospitals. “Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in our country, and by having the most advanced diagnostic and interventional tools right here in our community, we’re not just saving time — we’re saving lives. Our community deserves nothing less than the best, and this upgraded cardiac cath lab ensures they have it.”

Cath labs are essential in diagnosing and treating a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorders, and peripheral vascular disease. With the upgraded technology, procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, and electrophysiology studies can now be performed with even greater safety and efficiency.

“The benefits of the cardiac cath lab upgrade are already evident,” said Barak Wangler, RN, Cardiac Cath Lab Charge Nurse at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital. “Our team is operating with greater precision and collaboration, which is vital when managing complex cardiac cases and time-sensitive emergencies. This enhanced environment not only improves our workflow — it directly translates to better outcomes for our patients and faster, more effective care for our community.”

The cath lab upgrade is part of SSM Health’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to high-quality care and improving health outcomes across Southern Illinois. With this investment, SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital continues to lead the way in regional heart care, ensuring that patients receive the best possible treatment — right when and where they need it most.
