Madison, Wisconsin - SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Madison has earned national recognition from Forbes as one of America’s Top Hospitals and was also named among Wisconsin’s Best Regional Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.
The Forbes recognition places SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Madison among 781 hospitals nationwide recognized for excellence in quality and patient experience. The ranking is based on quality and patient experience data collected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Additionally, U.S. News & World Report recognized SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Madison as one of Wisconsin’s Best Regional Hospitals. The hospital received high-performance ratings in 13 procedures and conditions, including heart bypass surgery, hip replacement, back surgery and spinal fusion, pacemaker implantation, colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, prostate cancer surgery, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma care, heart attack care, diabetes care, heart arrhythmia care, and stroke care.

To earn Forbes’ America’s Best Hospitals distinction, hospitals were evaluated across four weighted categories: patient outcomes (55%), hospital best practices (20%), value (15%), and patient experience (10%). Each hospital received an overall quality rating ranging from 1-5 stars. SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Madison earned the highest possible rating of five stars.
For the U.S. News & World Report rankings, data was gathered from Medicare claims and other publicly available sources. To be named a Best Regional Hospital, a facility must earn at least eight High Performing ratings across 23 evaluated procedures and conditions and receive at least five more “high performing” ratings than ratings designated as “evaluated.”
