Anterior hip replacement puts high school coach back in the game

Chronic joint pain is one of America’s most common health conditions, with about one in four Americans suffering from arthritis, according to the CDC. Joint pain or injury can strike even the most active individuals when they least expect it.

No one likes to be taken out of the game with an unplanned injury, and that is just how B.W. Trenary, a high school football, track and field coach of 30 years from Norman, Okla., felt when pain first struck his right hip.

“I was demonstrating one of our discus moves, and as I was turning my hips to show the release, that’s when I felt the pain in my hip,” Trenary said. “That’s the initial point when it all started.”

That moment was a turning point.

After developing a limp when walking and suffering hip pain sometimes reaching an “8” or “9” on a 10-point scale, Trenary knew it was time to seek care at SSM Health Bone & Joint | OSOI, where he worked with a fellowship-trained orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon to determine the best course of treatment for his lifestyle and situation – an anterior hip replacement.

“An anterior hip replacement is approached from the front of the body rather than the more traditional approach from the back,” said Dr. Jacob Haynes, hip and knee replacement surgeon. “For patients who are candidates, this can be a more efficient, minimally invasive approach, which can often lead to a quicker recovery.”

Today, Trenary is back on the field with his students, resuming the hands-on technique demonstration and coaching he did pre-injury, and he describes life as being “100 times different.”

“My biggest regret is that I should have done it earlier,” Trenary said. “Don’t put it off like I did.
