According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 1 in 4 adults in the United States has arthritis.
Arthritis is the leading cause of work disability, as it can have a serious impact on functionality, productivity and overall quality of life.
Many people who have arthritis say their joints swell with certain types of weather, and research shows some people experience more intense pain in the damp, cold months.
What can you do to stay as comfortable as possible as we head into warmer months?
Try to:
Keep moving. Exercise helps improve range of motion and state of mind. It can also help with weight gain, which causes more joint pain. People with arthritis may benefit from physical therapy, too.
Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water and other liquids, but avoid too much caffeine and alcohol because they can actually cause dehydration.
Dress cool. Wear loose-fitting, natural fabrics like cotton and linen.
Get treatment. Once people start feeling pain and swelling in their joints, it’s important to seek help. Getting treatment as soon as possible can prevent further joint damage and discomfort.
