Got foot pain from flip flops?

by SSM Health

Summer is here and most of us are breaking out the flip flops and sandals, but should we be wearing them? SSM Health orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Sara Galli says it depends on the current state of your feet.

“If you have healthy, structurally sound feet, wearing flimsy shoes with no arch support isn’t so bad,” says Dr. Galli. “I like to call them taco shoes because you can fold them in half and the truth is, I wear them myself.”

What are common foot deformities?

She says the problem is when you have abnormal structure like:

  • flat feet
  • fallen arches
  • high arches
  • bunions
  • heel spurs

If you have any of these structural issues, you need to be more mindful of the type of footwear you choose. You may even require orthopedic shoes, inserts or surgery.

It’s all about time and distance.

Dr. Galli says for a healthy foot, pointy-toe pumps or slim-soled sandals aren’t a problem when you’re heading out to dinner because it’s only a short time or for a short distance. However, if you’re taking a walk to get some exercise, or you’re going to be on your feet all day, that’s another story.

“Arches should be supported. Try to avoid the taco shoes in general and don’t wear shoes your foot is not accustomed to.”

If you’re experiencing foot pain, request an appointment with one of our orthopedic providers to help you regain mobility and strength.
