Preparing for your next doctor appointment

by SSM Health

Have you ever walked out of your doctor appointment and remembered a question or symptom you wanted to ask about? If this happens to you, you’re not alone. SSM Health family medicine physician Dr. Roopa Shah offers tips on how you can prepare for the next appointment.

“The first thing people can do to prepare is make a list,” says Dr. Shah. “In the weeks or days leading up to your appointment, write down anything you want to discuss including symptoms and when you are experiencing them.”

In addition to detailed information about symptoms, Shah advises telling your provider about any medications and supplements you are taking. You can bring the bottles with you so that your provider is able to look at ingredients to check for possible drug interactions.

Don’t leave out embarrassing information

Unfortunately, many people leave out important information during their visit because they’re embarrassed. Smoking, STDs, alcohol and drug usage, and hemorrhoids are some of the topics that patients tend to skip.

“Providers treat these types of issues every day so there’s no need to feel embarrassed,” notes Shah. “Also, you may be leaving out information that could change the type of tests we would order that could reveal serious illness. For example, if you drink heavily, we may order a liver enzymes test to make sure your liver is functioning well.”

Ask your doctor for clarification

Shah says a lot of people may find medical terminology confusing, but asking for clarification is important so you understand your diagnosis and treatment. If your provider is using medical jargon, don’t wait until you get home to look it up.

And if you leave the appointment only to remember something you wanted to discuss?

“This happens to me all the time after I see my doctor,” laughs Shah. “Send a short note through MyChart to say what you forgot to mention.”
