Get Up. Get Out. Get Healthy.

The great outdoors makes a great gym

by SSM Health

When it comes to our health, one valuable resource is being overlooked: the outdoors. Fresh air, sunshine and room to move all have a significant impact on our health. Now, research is showing that in our digital age we’re spending an increasingly small amount of time soaking in the benefits of spending time outside.

Now that fall is in the air, why not put down that phone, turn that TV show off, and get outside to enjoy the many benefits of the great outdoors?
  • No membership fees! You can get active outside for free and take in the beauty around us at the same time.
  • You might get a harder workout. When you’re active outdoors you are in an ever-changing environment – hills, slight inclines, changing temps. This is good for your workout!
  • You can work out at any time. But be sure to drink enough water and avoid extreme temperatures. And wear sunscreen!
  • Working out can become part of your lifestyle. Go on a hike instead of a drive. Plan outdoor activities with your family. The options are limitless!
Being outside doesn’t just help your physical health, but your mental health as well. The great outdoors:
  • Raises levels of Vitamin D. This protects from future bone problems, heart disease, diabetes and other health issues.
  • Improves distance vision and lowers the chance of nearsightedness.
  • Reduces stress levels.
  • Protects emotional development. This includes a decreased risk of anxiety and depression.
  • Enhances social interactions and strengthens the value of community and close relationships.
So get out, get moving, and get healthy!
