Intensive Care for Seriously Ill and Injured Children

The critical care medicine department at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital is on call 24 hours a day to provide the highest level of care to seriously-ill infants, children and adolescents. The expertise of our skilled specialists combined with state-of-the-art equipment enables us to meet the urgent needs of every child who comes through our doors.

Our team consists of board-certified SLUCare Physician Group critical care physicians, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists and advanced practice nurses. Together, we offer life-saving care to children in areas throughout the hospital, including the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the Transitional Care Unit (TCU), the emergency room, and the operating room.

Our Services

Critical care medicine is a field focused on caring for children diagnosed with life-threatening conditions. Our role centers around state-of-the-art respiratory and heart pressure/flow management of critically ill children. We are also involved in the care of children recovering from complex heart procedures and organ transplants.

We provide critical care in several areas of our hospital:

  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU): Serves more than 1,000 patients annually, providing state-of-the-art respiratory and circulatory care, as well as neurological management of critically-ill children
  • Dana Brown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): Cares for newborns with serious conditions such as a premature birth or heart defects
  • Transitional Care Unit: Provides comprehensive, coordinated care for our patients with medically complex conditions
  • Emergency and Trauma Center: Designated a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, we see and treat more than 60,000 children every year for all types of injuries and illnesses
  • Operating Room: Delivers state-of-the-art procedures to care for all of your child's surgical needs
  • Pediatric Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Suite: Utilizes the latest technology to diagnose and operate on a child's heart in one room, in one safe procedure
