Types of Hearing Aids for Children

Hearing aids provide a benefit for many children with hearing loss. Our audiologists are experienced in diagnosing a variety of hearing disorders and conditions. They can determine if hearings aids are necessary for your child.

Hearing Aid Options

Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids

The most used hearing aid in children, the BTE is used for many types of hearing loss and sits comfortably behind the ear.

Receiver-in-the-canal (RIC) hearing aids

Similar to a BTE hearing aid, the RIC sits comfortably behind the ear, but has a speaker in the ear canal that allows for a variety of open earmold fits.

What to Expect During the Hearing Aid Fitting and Usage Process

If your child is found to have hearing loss and can benefit from the use of hearing aids, we will counsel your family and refer your child for any additional evaluations. From here, our team will:

  • Help your child obtain medical clearance for the use of hearing aids by an ENT or your child’s PCP.
  • Discuss options and select a device that is appropriate for your child.
  • Fit your child appropriately with their hearing aids using Real Ear Measurements (REM).
  • Educate your family on how to use the hearing aids.
  • Direct you to any additional programs for support.
  • Provide follow-up care to ensure the hearing aids are still appropriate for your child.
