(MADISON, Wis., March 2, 2023) – SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification.

St. Mary’s Hospital underwent a rigorous, two-day on-site review on October 25 and 26. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with thrombectomy certification standards including program management, clinical quality measures, speed of care received, and specific measurements around successful procedures and patient recovery. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison is thrilled to receive this higher-level stroke center certification,” says Craig Sommers, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison Vice President of Operations. “This certification further underscores the exceptional quality of care our team provides to stroke patients, as well as their tireless dedication to continuously improving the patient-centered care we provide.”

St. Mary’s has 24/7 stroke thrombectomy capabilities with the addition of Neuroendovascular physicians. They can quickly remove clots from the brain using a minimally invasive procedure. Quick interventions during a stroke improve the patients’ chances of survival and a full recovery.

“Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Deborah Ryan, MS, RN, interim executive vice president, Accreditation and Certification Operations, The Joint Commission. “We commend SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for stroke patients.”
