Jefferson City, MO – Jefferson City High School (JCHS) students in the Civil Leadership class presented Sunshine Boxes to patients at the SSM Health Cancer Center in Jefferson City on Monday, April 1 2024.
The gift boxes were the culmination of a service project students worked on during the semester. The class is structed to mimic student government. Students brainstormed ideas for a service project by identifying a problem or issue in the community and then researching it. After a vote, a service project was put into action.
Ella Jobe, one of the students in the Civil Leadership class, said she was inspired to bring forward the idea for the Sunshine Boxes because her aunt was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is undergoing treatment.
Sunshine Boxes include a few goodies, such as fuzzy socks, snacks, water, and handwritten letters, to lift the spirits of patients undergoing radiation oncology cancer treatment at SSM Health.
