Mt. Vernon, IL – Regional Perioperative Educators, Farrah Barnes, BSN, RN, CNOR, at SSM Health in Southern Illinois and Missy DeVore, BSN, RN at SSM Health in St. Louis, MO orchestrated a Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) Crisis Escape Room at the AORN (Association of perioperative Registered Nurses) Global Surgical Conference & Expo in Nashville, TN. The high demand of the escape room led to additional sessions to the conference’s schedule.
“I am always looking for ways to make education engaging and fun.” said Farrah Barnes, RN. “When I was selected to host a session of the MH crisis escape room at a global conference, I was excited to say the least. And when we had to keep adding more sessions due to popularity, I was all in for the challenge.”
In the escape room participants looked for clues to identify the signs and symptoms to pinpoint the crises. Once the crisis was established as a MH crisis the attendees worked through the steps of the crises by calling the emergency operator, mixing medications, identifying recommend doses and finding interventions for the patient in the crisis.
“We are so lucky to be able to experience this very innovative education opportunity locally.” said Britney Pennypacker BSN, RN, Inpatient Wound Care at SSM Health. “We are so proud of Farrah to provide education on a global scale.”
