MT. VERNON, IL — In a major step toward advancing patient care and clinical training, the nursing team at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital - Mt. Vernon has introduced a high-fidelity simulation manikin, Anne, into their education program. This investment, made possible through the generous donor support of SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, is transforming how nurses—both new graduates and seasoned professionals—develop and refine their clinical skills.

The decision to purchase Anne was driven by a clear need: to bridge the gap between nursing knowledge and clinical action. Unlike traditional training methods, high-fidelity simulators like Anne replicate real-life patient responses with remarkable accuracy. She breathes, bleeds, speaks, and reacts to interventions, allowing nurses to practice everything from basic assessments to complex emergency procedures in a safe, controlled environment.

“This technology gives our nurses the opportunity to rehearse low-frequency, high-risk scenarios that are critical to patient safety,” said Jill Belcher, RN, Interim Regional Manager of Clinical Education for SSM Health in Southern Illinois. “It builds confidence, sharpens critical thinking, and strengthens teamwork.”

Since implementation, nurses have reported increased confidence in performing low-volume skills and improved collaboration during simulated emergencies. The realistic scenarios help reinforce best practices and prepare staff for a wide range of clinical situations.

Most importantly, this investment is already contributing to improved patient outcomes. By reducing errors and enhancing preparedness, simulation-based learning is helping nurses deliver safer, more effective care.

Kay Zibby-Damron, Regional Foundation Director at SSM Health in Southern Illinois, remarks, “This investment in simulation technology is a powerful example of how our donors are helping transform patient care at the bedside. By supporting education and advanced training tools, like Anne, our donors are not only empowering our nurses – they’re directly contributing to safer, more confident care for every patient we serve.”

With support from charitable donors, the nursing team hopes to continue expanding simulation-based education throughout Southern Illinois, ensuring that every SSM Health nurse has access to the tools needed to provide exceptional care.

Donors can be confident that their generosity is making a meaningful impact on the lives of our patients and coworkers by supporting the development of new technologies or techniques that improve patient outcomes.
