SSM Health and UnitedHealthcare reach new multi-year agreement

Patients with commercial employer-sponsored and Medicaid UnitedHealthcare insurance retain access to high-quality, local care at SSM Health in Missouri

January 20, 2026 03:37 PM -

SSM Health and UnitedHealthcare (UHC) have signed a multi-year agreement to continue caring for more than 140,000 UnitedHealthcare-covered patients across the state of Missouri. This agreement means patients with commercial (employer-sponsored) and Medicaid UnitedHealthcare plans can continue receiving care from the SSM Health doctors and hospitals they know and trust without disruption at in-network rates.

This multiple year agreement follows the Letter of Agreement signed on December 31, 2025, that protected patients’ access while both parties came to a full agreement.

If patients have canceled or postponed any appointments, they should reschedule online via MyChart or call their SSM Health provider’s office to resume care as they normally would.

SSM Health accepts a broad selection of insurance plans, including commercial (employer-sponsored), government, and marketplace options. For a complete list of accepted plans, visit ssmhealth.com/insurance.

December 31, 2025 02:45 PM - SSM Health and UnitedHealthcare (UHC) have signed a letter of agreement on a new contract to continue caring for more than 140,000 UnitedHealthcare-covered patients at in-network rates.

The letter of agreement is a 30-day extension on the current contract with a focus on keeping patients with commercial (employer-sponsored) and Medicaid UnitedHealthcare plans in network. This means patients can continue receiving care from the SSM Health doctors and hospitals without disruption at in-network rates. Our teams will continue working with UHC on a multi-year agreement that secures our patients' access to the care they need.

This is a win for our patients and communities who deserve the high-quality care they know and trust.

We apologize for any concern or inconvenience our negotiations may have caused our patients and the community. Our focus has always been – and will always be – to provide the safe, trusted care our patients and their family’s need.

If patients have canceled or rescheduled any appointments, we encourage them to reschedule online via MyChart or call their SSM Health provider’s office to resume care as they normally would.

December 19, 2025 04:30 PM - SSM Health’s focus has always been – and will always be – to provide the safe, trusted care you and your family need.

Unfortunately, UnitedHealthcare (UHC) hasn’t demonstrated a willingness to collaborate on a new, fair agreement, and the expiration date of our current contract is quickly approaching on December 31, 2025.

Instead of working with us on an agreement, UnitedHealthcare is prioritizing its own profits over what its members truly deserve – high-quality, accessible care.

If UnitedHealthcare does not agree to a fair contract before December 31, 2025, patients will lose in-network access to SSM Health hospitals, clinics, and doctors across Missouri. This includes SSM Health Medical Group, SLUCare Physician Group, and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

UnitedHealthcare is a for-profit company. They continue to raise premiums for families and employers—often by 7% to 10% each year. At the same time, they are denying more claims for care that doctors say their patients need.

Non-profit systems like SSM Health are not receiving these same increases from UnitedHealthcare. Costs are rising, and patient needs continue to grow, yet we remain committed to caring for our community because it is the right thing to do.

SSM Health remains committed to working in good faith with UnitedHealthcare to renew our contracts and remain a participating provider in UHC’s commercial and Medicaid networks and ensure patients maintain in-network access to SSM Health’s services, clinicians, and facilities.

While we’re hopeful we will come to a resolution, if our contract expires before an agreement is reached, SSM Health’s doctors, clinics, and hospitals may be out of UHC’s commercial and Medicaid networks beginning Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026.

We are deeply saddened by UHC’s approach and the disruption this will cause to the patients who trust us to deliver the care they need.

This change could affect our patients’ ability to continue receiving the care they trust from SSM Health, which may include increased out-of-pocket costs.

While costs for everyday services continue to rise, healthcare is no exception. For years, UnitedHealthcare has failed to cover the full cost of delivering the care our patients need. As a nonprofit health system committed to caring for all – especially the underserved – we cannot allow UnitedHealthcare to continue these tactics.

UnitedHealthcare has continued to raise member premiums and benefit from record profits, while withholding fair compensation from health systems like ours. To ensure we can keep delivering high-quality, accessible care, we must hold UnitedHealthcare accountable.

Patients should keep all appointments, tests and procedures scheduled through the end of the year to ensure they continue to receive the care they need.

December 11, 2025 09:35 AM - SSM Health is working in good faith with UnitedHealthcare (UHC) to renew our contracts and remain a participating provider in United’s commercial and Medicaid networks.

We are committed to partnering with UnitedHealthcare to ensure patients maintain in-network access to SSM Health’s services, clinicians, and facilities.

Unfortunately, during negotiations, United has prioritized its own profits over what its members truly deserve – high-quality, accessible care.

UnitedHealthcare is prioritizing profits over the care our patients need and deserve—and that’s unacceptable.

At SSM Health, guided by our Mission and Values, we are committed to delivering care to all, especially to the underserved who need it most.

We cannot continue to let UnitedHealthcare put their own profits ahead of the care our patients need.

Our providers and clinicians must be able to deliver the right care for each patient without limitations.

While we’re hopeful we will come to a resolution, if our contract expires before an agreement is reached, SSM Health’s doctors, clinics, and hospitals may be out of UHC’s commercial and Medicaid networks beginning Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026.

We know how important it is for our patients to have in-network access to the high-quality care they depend on from our doctors. We remain committed to continuing negotiations with the goal of reaching an agreement before our contract expires on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.

It is important to know that SSM Health will remain in network with your UnitedHealthcare plan for the rest of 2025.

Patients should keep all appointments, tests and procedures scheduled through the end of the year to ensure they continue to receive the care they need.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We have been working with UnitedHealthcare to reach a new agreement before our current commercial and Medicaid contracts expire on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.

If our contract expires before an agreement is reached, SSM Health may be removed from United’s commercial and Medicaid networks beginning Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. This could cause patients to pay more out of pocket to continue receiving care from the providers they trust.

Contract negotiations with insurance companies are a standard process that happens every three to four years. These contracts govern the amount provider organizations like SSM Health are paid, as well as standards of behavior – like the way insurance claims are processed and how prior authorizations are handled.

We’re committed to helping patients stay healthy and well by maintaining in-network access to high-quality care at an affordable price, and we demonstrate this by negotiating fair agreements with insurance companies. We would be unable to provide the services our communities depend on if we did not maintain reasonable contracts with insurance companies. That is why we have been working in good faith with UnitedHealthcare to reach a new, fair agreement.

Yes, patients will maintain their insurance coverage, but if our contract expires before an agreement is reached, patients will no longer be able to receive care from SSM Health at an in-network rate beginning Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. This means UnitedHealthcare may require patients to use out-of-network benefits, if available, or cover a greater portion of care out of pocket.

UnitedHealthcare Commercial and Medicaid plans are impacted by our current negotiations. These plans include all commercial plans.

Please note that the December 31 deadline does not impact UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage, DSNP (Dual Special Needs), and VACCN (VA Community Care Network) plans which will remain in network.

No, this does not affect patients with Medicare Advantage plans provided by UnitedHealthcare.

Yes. By federal law, emergency care is always covered as in-network. In a true emergency, you may go to any hospital, no matter if they are in your plan’s network or not.

Your voice matters. Patients can call United at the number on the back of their insurance card and tell them that they want to keep access to SSM Health services, clinicians and facilities.

  • For Commercial Patients: Patients should also reach out to their employer’s Human Resources or Benefits Department to express concern about the possibility of losing access to care at SSM Health and urge them to contact UnitedHealthcare on your behalf. UnitedHealthcare ’s network without SSM Health is not the health plan that patients, nor employers, signed up for.
  • For Medicaid Patients: Patients can reach out to the Managed Care Enrollment Helpline at 800-348-6627 with questions regarding options and how to protect in-network access to care at SSM Health in the event we do not reach an agreement before our current contract expires.

Patients with certain health conditions or undergoing active courses of treatment may qualify for Continuity of Care benefits, which would allow patients to continue receiving care at an in-network rate for a period of time, even if our contract ends.

Patients should call the number on the back of their insurance card to ask for more information about Continuity of Care or ask for a form that can be completed with their physician.
