Big News in Pediatric Cardiology Care

We would like to share some news from SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and Saint Louis University School of Medicine regarding expansion of our faculty for both pediatric cardiology and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery.

Vernat Exil, MD

Vernat Exil, MD, MBA, FAAP, joins SSM Health Cardinal Glennon as the new Division Director of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Exil has a long history of treating patients experiencing heart disease and failure and those needing heart transplants. We’re thrilled to have Dr. Exil’s expertise to further enhance our programs offered to patients. Dr. Exil received his medical degree from the University of Panama School of Medicine, completed his residency at Boston City Hospital, and completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine.

Ugo Nwankwo, MD

Ugo Nwankwo, MD, joins our Pediatric Interventional Cardiology program to provide skilled care in the management of young patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and intervention. In addition, Dr. Nwankwo, who is board certified in both pediatric cardiology and adult congenital cardiology, will lead our efforts to develop a full-service Adult Congenital Cardiac Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. Dr. Nwankwo earned his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He completed his fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an advanced fellowship in cardiac catheterization at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Laura Schoeneberg, MD

Laura Schoeneberg, MD, joins our Division of Pediatric Cardiology and expands the expertise we have in our growing cardiac MRI and CT program. She earned her medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed her pediatric residency at University of Florida, Gainesville. She also completed an advanced pediatric cardiology imaging fellowship at the University of Texas in Houston. In her role with us, she is also expanding our prenatal cardiology program, providing fetal echo services and prenatal counseling for fetuses with congenital heart disease.

Corinne Tan, MD

Corinne Tan, MD, joins our pediatric cardiothoracic surgery team and will focus on both children and adults born with congenital heart defects. She earned her medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completed a general surgery residency at Indiana University School of Medicine and a surgical critical care fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Tan subsequently completed a thoracic surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and a congenital cardiac surgery fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.
