Wisconsin Eagle Scout uses project to help SSM Health at Home honor military Veterans

by SSM Health

As part of the We Honor Veterans program, SSM Health at Home provides pinning ceremonies to hospice patients who are military Veterans. During these ceremonies, patients are recognized for their military service by SSM Health at Home’s hospice staff, volunteers, and family members.

In Monroe, these Veterans area also presented with American flag displays as part of the pinning ceremony. These flag displays have become a tradition in Monroe over the past five years. They were first made by the late Larry Hummel, both a Veteran and an SSM Health at Home hospice volunteer. At the time Larry worked for Faith Engineering who generously created and donated medallions for the front of the displays.

When Monroe High School student Jared Batz was considering what to do for his Eagle Scout project, he was approached by scout leader and MHS tech educator Dan Saunders about creating these flag displays for SSM Health at Home. Jared chose to continue the tradition as his project. He provided leadership to students and educators in coordinating all the aspects of assembling 80 wooden flag displays. These new displays continue to be adorned with a medallion donated by Faith Engineering.

During his Eagle Scout ceremony, Jared shared his project with community members, local Veterans, and SSM Health at Home staff. Thanks to Jared and Faith Engineering, these flag displays will continue to be an integral part of the pinning ceremony for Veteran SSM Health at Home hospice patients in Monroe.
